Beyond the Surface: Beirut’s Political Holes

The creative research project in the form of an exhibition seeks to archive the spatial entities- the political holes- formed through the demolition of buildings in Beirut city during and after its civil war (1975-1990). The political hole is considered to be a physical and psychological hole representing the liminal phase of a city, and resulting in a change of people’s experience, memory, and understanding of a city. Based on Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner’s analysis of the liminal (1960), the exhibition aimed at pulling together the individual pieces that form the narratives behind these political holes. Using various methods – maps, videos, photographs and interviews – the physical and psychological political holes were documented revealing their importance within the city.
